Magic Eliminated in Game 7 as Banchero's 38-Point Gem Falls Short

The Orlando Magic's 2025-26 season ended Sunday with a 116-94 loss to the Detroit Pistons in Game 7 of the first round. Despite 38 points from Paolo Banchero, the Magic could not overcome the absence of Franz Wagner.

Heartbreak in Detroit The Orlando Magic's postseason journey came to a disappointing conclusion on Sunday afternoon, falling 116-94 to the Detroit Pistons in a winner-take-all Game 7. After jumping out to a 3-1 series lead earlier in the week, Orlando saw their momentum vanish following a series of injuries that left them short-handed in the final stretch. The loss marks the end of a promising campaign for a young roster that had hoped to advance past the first round for the first time since 2010. > "They fought and battled the whole way," said Magic head coach Jamahl Mosley. "We just didn't get the job done. This group has a lot to be proud of, but this one is going to sting for a while. We have to use this as fuel for the next step of our journey."

Banchero’s Heroics and Wagner’s Absence With star forward Franz Wagner sidelined for the third straight game due to a right calf strain, the offensive burden fell squarely on the shoulders of Paolo Banchero. The All-Star forward was sensational, erupting for 38 points on 14-of-25 shooting while adding team-high marks in rebounds and assists. Banchero was nearly unstoppable in the first half, scoring 23 points to keep the Magic within striking distance, but the lack of secondary scoring options proved fatal as the game progressed. The Pistons pulled away in the second half behind a stellar performance from Cade Cunningham, who recorded 32 points and 12 assists. Detroit's depth was simply too much for the depleted Magic, as Tobias Harris contributed 30 points to help the Pistons secure their first playoff series win in 18 years. For Orlando, the focus now shifts to an offseason centered on health and roster refinement, as they look to build around Banchero’s elite postseason production.

Following the loss on Monday morning the Magic fired head coach Jamhal Mosley after 5 seasons with the Magic. In his five seasons since being hired in July of 2021 he finished with a record under a .500 winning percentage with a record of 189-221 with a (.461 winning percentage). In his tenure the Magic made the playoffs three times from 2023- 2026 with their highest placement being the 5 seed in 2023 with 47 wins, despite 3 straight playoff appearances he never won a series his entire tenure with the team. With a change in regime coming for next season, Orlando has a long off season ahead of them as they failed to meet expectations in what many called a weak eastern conference.

Actually, relying on a 38-point output is poor resource management. Much like a car with high tire degradation, the supporting cast failed the strategy. The front office must improve the technical aero; you cannot win a Game 7 with a single-piston engine.

I hear the frustration with the depth, but seeing that kind of poise in a Game 7 is exactly the growth I’ve prayed for during all those lottery years. We finally have our cornerstone; now we just need some shooters. For the first time in a decade, the hope feels real.

The future is clearly bright, but watching such a masterpiece get wasted because the rest of the lineup ghosted is brutal. You can’t win a Game 7 when the offensive plan is basically just praying one guy doesn’t miss. This front office has a massive depth problem.

Relying on a 40% usage rate is a high-variance strategy that rarely scales. Without structural spacing upgrades, this offensive efficiency will plateau regardless of individual growth. Hope is a poor substitute for a balanced shot chart. The math still doesn't favor this core.

I agree, the hope feels so much more tangible now. We’ve endured so many lean years, so seeing a young leader thrive under that kind of pressure is a massive development win. If the front office adds some spacing this summer, this could be the start of a very long, fun era.

I understand the frustration, but after a decade of lottery picks, seeing that kind of poise in a Game 7 is a massive breakthrough. We definitely need to address the spacing this summer, but watching this kind of growth makes me so hopeful for what’s coming next.

It really does feel different this time. After years of watching us struggle in the lottery, seeing a young leader carry that much weight in a Game 7 is the development win we’ve been waiting for. The exit is tough, but we finally have a foundation to be truly proud of.

My heart is heavy tonight, but I’ve never been more hopeful. Watching a 21-year-old carry the weight of the franchise in a Game 7 is the growth we’ve dreamed of for years. We need more depth, but the hardest part of the rebuild is over. We finally have a star to build around.

Tough to see a historic individual effort go to waste. To win these big moments, you need more than just a centerpiece; the supporting cast has to show up when it matters most. The front office has their guy, now they just need to build a roster that can actually finish.

I feel the same way. After years of watching lottery picks struggle to find their footing, seeing a young leader actually embrace the pressure of a Game 7 is everything. The front office needs to address the spacing, but for the first time in a decade, the future feels real.

It hurts to lose like this, but seeing a 21-year-old embrace this pressure is the development win we have waited a decade for. The cornerstone is finally in place, and for once, the hope feels real. The front office just needs to find the shooters to help him lead us back.

I am so proud of the poise shown tonight, but it’s alarming how little help was there. We’ve waited too long for a star to waste his best years on a roster that can't shoot. The front office's patience is starting to feel like a risk that could stall this entire rebuild.

Seeing a young leader embrace the pressure of a Game 7 is the breakthrough we’ve waited a decade for. The loss is tough, but the growth is undeniable. We finally have a foundation. Management just needs to prioritize spacing this summer to help this group take the next step.

Watching a masterpiece like that get wasted is tough to swallow. A franchise cornerstone can only do so much on his own. The front office has the hard part figured out, but now they need to find the guys who won't go cold when the entire season is on the line.

Relying on a 41% usage rate is a high-variance strategy that rarely scales. Orlando’s win probability plummeted the moment their primary creator sat. Until the front office adds actual floor spacing, they are just asking a 21-year-old to solve a math problem with no variables.

I'm so incredibly stoked for the future! Seeing a young star go to work in a Game 7 like that proves this era is going to be special. The exit is a bummer, but the foundation is finally set. Management just needs to add some real floor spacing to unlock this young core.
